Due to repeated requests from the inhabitants of UZI and N'gambwa, the DTP started the solar electrification of 50 households on the peninsula UZI in the spring of 2005. The project was realized by DTP volunteers, solar students and teachers, engineers of the Energy Department of the University of Dar es Salaam and inhabitants of the village. It started with a feasibility study and repeated meetings with the village people. The cooperative UZIesco was founded so the administration of the revenues of the power supply could be accomplished on site. UZIesco runs itself independently now. Mr. Mtumweni, the "solar expert" of UZI is an active member of ZASEA and is involved in solar installations all over the island.
