„Fremdsein“, das, Substantiv, Neutrum. Bewusstsein der eigenen Fremdheit. „Das Fremde bezeichnet etwas, das als abweichend von Vertrautem wahrgenommen wird, das heißt, als etwas tatsächlich oder vermeintlich Andersartiges oder weit Entferntes“ (Wikipedia). Aber was bedeutet Fremdsein überhaupt, woher kommt dieses Gefühl? Wir haben einige Mitfreiwillige sowie tansanische Gastfamilien und Freunde gefragt, wie sie das Thema „fremd sein“ erfahren haben und wie sie versuchen, damit umzugehen.

Musik spielt in Tansania eine besondere Rolle. Sie ist allgegenwärtig. In Dallas, im Büro, in den Straßen - überall sind rhythmische, meist mit Gesang versehene und durchweg fröhlich klingende Lieder zu hören. Die eine tansanische Musik gibt es jedoch nicht, denn wie das Land selbst, ist auch die Musik sehr vielfältig. So gibt es laut BASATA (Baraza la Sanaa la Taifa = Nationaler Kunstrat) in Tansania eine stetige musikalische Weiterentwicklung und aktuell sechs (Haupt-)Musikgenres, welche wir im Folgenden vorstellen werden (Askew, 2002; Hutchinson, 2018):
